What’s Stopping You from Your Dream Job?
WHAT’S STOPPING YOU FROM YOUR DREAM JOB?
I’m not talking about running a sunscreen sales hut on a beach in Hawaii. This might be a “dream job,” but it’s generally based on escape, not inspiration. It might be short lived, you might get bored, or you might just need a vacation. So, let’s restate the question: What is your dream job that is fueled by inspiration?
If we really explore what we love to do, we can start to see ways to make money doing it. Maybe not as much money as we’d like, but enough, coupled with the fulfillment of living your inspiration every day to compensate.
Think about someone who has your dream job. What did they do differently to get to that spot? Outside of literal physical circumstances, there is likely nothing to stop you from taking the same path except your own fear and self doubt. Didn’t they take the same risks you’re afraid to take?
The book, The Four Hour Work Week by Tim Ferris, is not based on doing what inspires us for money. Rather it is focused on how to work less to have more time for enjoying and living the inspired life. While some of his most extreme principles may be difficult for many (or himself) to adopt, it still is an inspiring look at what’s possible. It provides a refresh on how free we can be from traditional views, expectations and excuses around our standard jobs. This book inspired me to think outside the box I’d come to accept around what work “had” to be.
If we want to live the inspired life, we have two options regarding our relationship with work: 1) work in a job that doesn’t inspire us so we can afford what does; or 2) work in a job that inspires us on a foundational level for general daily fulfillment.
The idea of quitting to work an inspired job can be terrifying, but if we talk with or read blogs from those who have, we’ll find their writing is hardly gloomy or filled with fear. It’s alive with inspiration! It’s energizing and motivating to read. While some realities and responsibilities may settle in, we can find a way to make money from inspiring activities.
The most exciting part about working within what inspires us is that we are better than most at our chosen field because we’re authentically curious and committed to our cause. Your passion will be contagious, infused in your work, inspiring your customers and providing infinite opportunities for soul-quenching and monetary rewards.
